Literacy at Home

Yokayo Elementary School

November 2017

Dear Yokayo Families,

As I walked around our school this past week, and visited classrooms, I am so proud of the work by teachers, staff, and students.  It is wonderful to see how much effort they are all putting forward.  Each classroom is busy throughout the day creating memorable moments of learning with a clear focus on student success.  There are five key components to reading that Yokayo students are working on mastering.  These components include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Please help support our readers by making sure your child reads EVERYDAY as part of their daily routine.  With your support for reading outside the classroom, together we can send the message to our children that reading is essential in today’s world.  Keep plenty of reading materials in your home such as books, magazines, newspapers, and comic books for your child to enjoy.

Family time is so important.  Here are some tips to help you integrate reading into your everyday family activities.

  • Read and point out road signs as you are in the car
  • Read bedtime stories
  • Play a board game
  • Visit your local library
  • Read a recipe and cook something yummy together
  • Create a comfy reading place in your home
  • Put your child in charge of reading the grocery list at the store
  • Have your child read the menu at a restaurant
